Mr. Courtney graduated from the University of Southern California in 1974, after having majored in both Accounting and Finance. He worked for the Big Eight accounting firm of Peat, Marwick & Mitchell between 1974 and 1976, and was awarded his California CPA certificate in 1976. Later in that year he attended Loyola University School of Law and graduated in 1979, with emphasis in business and tax law.
He practiced with the downtown Los Angeles law firm of Hill, Farrer & Burrill until 1985, with specialties in tax, estate planning, and general business planning. In 1985 he left the practice of law and joined Integrated Resources, a New York based Financial Services company as a private placement specialist for the Los Angeles region. His responsibilities included the assisting in the marketing of private placement security transactions to high net worth individuals and businesses.
In 1987 he began his own financial planning practice, and in 1988 located his office in West Los Angeles with Provident Mutual Life Insurance Company. He holds a Series 7 securities qualification* with approval to transact business in various states and holds an active insurance license in California and other states. Mr. Courtney is an inactive member of the California State Bar and a member of the Taxation and Estate and Trusts subsections of the Bar.
Mr. Courtney is a member of the insurance industry’s Million Dollar Round Table and is Top of the Table Qualifier for 2007. In April 2008, Mr. Courtney transferred his securities qualifications to LPL Financial, the largest independent brokerage firm in the nation. **
In 2008, Mr. Courtney along with Tom Forsythe, formed Coastal Insurance & Financial Services L.L.C., a firm dedicated to providing insurance and investment services to individuals and businesses.
Mr. Courtney resides in Manhattan Beach with his wife, Mary, of 22 years and has two sons, Kevin, a student at the University of Colorado, and Scott, a student at Mira Costa High School. He is a 27 plus year member of the Jonathan Club in downtown Los Angeles, an avid fan of Trojan football and a sometimes avid golfer.
